OCR: STEAM ENGINE The steam engine differs from the gas and diesel engines in that it is one of several types of external combustion engines; other types include the hot air engine and gas turbine. All details of the steam engine cycle are not shown on the accompanying stack, therefore the operation will be briefly described here: 1) Water is forced into the boiler under pressure (600 psi in this example). Unlike the compression cycle of the gas engine and particularly the diesel, the amount of work required to pump water into the boiler is negligible compared to the work released by even a very inefficient steam engine. (See below for the implications of this.)
